Numerology: VIIIs

In minor arcana numerology (a base ten system), eights typically represent the ripening before the harvest. As eights approach completion of the cycle (i.e., from seed to bounty) they may also indicate a phase of mastery and accomplishment. Others sources believe eight is the number of death and regeneration, rebirth and change (Sherman-Burke & Caselli, 2012; Yoshitani, 2020). However, like all things in tarot and life, the outcome is not foretold:

The fruit is left to warm up in the sun or to freeze in the frost.

Advanced numerology (Tree of Life/Kabbalah)

Many tarot practitioners and scholars identify thematic and numerological similarities with the Kabbalah, a mystical interpretation of Judaism. Please keep in mind that I am very much a beginner here, so take what follows with a grain of salt. The following quote captures well how confusing it can be to approach this study: “Modern minds accustomed to think in straight lines may feel initially that the Kabalah resembles a medieval crossword puzzle too difficult to solve…” (Gray, 1972).

However, based off of my reading, the base ten tarot numerology of the minor arcana corresponds to the ten Sephiroth of the Tree of Life (see diagram below). Briefly, the Tree of Life is a metaphor that describes one’s journey from nothingness to manifestation and enlightenment. Each Sephirah define a distinct step on this cosmic journey.

The eighth Sephirah is Hod, the Scientist. Hod is associated with splendor, form, and intelligence. Hod is also the sphere of Mercury/Hermes who, in Hermetic and Kabbalistic traditions, is the god of science and books (though in Greek myth, he is better known as the messenger and trickster). Tree of Life numerology may be further analyzed based off its three pillars, which demonstrate the essential concept of balance. The eighth Sephirah falls on the left pillar, the Pillar of Severity. In contrast to the right pillar, the left pillar is considered female, negative, and passive. Finally, we can note that Hod is part of the third triangle (downward pointing), which is one of manifestation and personality.
